A secondary condition is a disability caused or aggravated by a condition that is already service connected. Secondary service connection is one of the most common ways veterans establish additional ratings without needing new in-service evidence.

What a secondary claim requires
Three elements generally need to be in the record: a current diagnosis of the secondary condition, an existing service-connected condition, and competent medical evidence linking the two — either causation or aggravation beyond the natural progression.
Aggravation claims are often overlooked. If a service-connected condition made a pre-existing or non-service-connected condition measurably worse, that worsening can be compensated.

Do I need a nexus letter for a secondary claim?
A supporting medical opinion is usually what decides these claims. It should identify the primary condition, the secondary diagnosis, and the medical reasoning connecting them.
Can a secondary condition be rated higher than the primary?
Yes. Each condition is evaluated on its own criteria, so a secondary condition can carry a higher evaluation than the condition that caused it.
What is aggravation?
Aggravation means a service-connected condition made another condition worse than it would otherwise have been. VA compensates the measurable increase in severity.
