VA Diagnostic Codes Explained for Veterans
A Diagnostic Code (DC) is the four-digit number VA uses to identify which set of rating criteria applies to a condition. The code on your rating decision tells you exactly which paragraph of 38 CFR Part 4 the rater used.

How to read a Diagnostic Code
Codes are grouped by body system. The 5000 series covers musculoskeletal conditions, 6000 covers organs of special sense and the respiratory system, 7000 covers cardiovascular and digestive conditions, 8000 covers neurological conditions, and 9000 covers mental disorders.
A hyphenated code such as 5299-5237 means VA rated a condition by analogy: the first number identifies the body part or unlisted condition and the second identifies the criteria actually applied.

Why the code VA chose matters
Two codes can describe the same complaint but carry very different maximum evaluations. If VA rated your condition under a code that does not fit the symptoms in your records, that is a reviewable issue in a Higher-Level Review or a supplemental claim.
Check your rating decision for the code, then read the criteria for that code and confirm the findings in your exam match what the criteria require.

Can a Diagnostic Code change?
