How to Prepare for a VA C&P Exam
A Compensation and Pension (C&P) exam is the appointment VA schedules to document a claimed condition. The examiner is not there to treat you — they complete a Disability Benefits Questionnaire that a rater later matches against the rating criteria.

What happens at a C&P exam
The examiner reviews your file, asks about onset, frequency, and severity, performs any required testing, and records findings on a DBQ. Appointments are often short, so what you say in the first few minutes carries weight.
Answer about your average and your worst days, not only how you feel in the exam room. If a movement hurts, say so instead of pushing through silently.
- Describe frequency in concrete numbers — episodes per week or month
- Explain functional effects on work, sleep, and daily activities
- Report flare-ups, including how long they last and what you cannot do
- Do not exaggerate and do not minimize
- Bring a list of medications and recent test results
After the exam
Write down what was asked, what tests were performed, and anything you forgot to mention while it is fresh. Those notes are useful if the exam was inadequate and you later need to challenge it.
You can request a copy of the completed DBQ, which will appear in your C-File.
