Tinnitus VA Disability Rating
Tinnitus — persistent ringing, buzzing, hissing, or roaring in the ears — is rated under Diagnostic Code 6260 in 38 CFR 4.87. A single evaluation is assigned for recurrent tinnitus whether the sound is perceived in one ear, both ears, or in the head.

Recurrent tinnitus. This is the maximum schedular evaluation under DC 6260, and only one evaluation is assigned regardless of whether tinnitus is unilateral or bilateral.

- Worse in quiet environments or at night
- Difficulty concentrating or following conversation
- Trouble falling asleep
- Irritability and fatigue from constant noise

- Service records showing artillery, aircraft, engine room, or small arms exposure
- Lay statement describing when the ringing started and how constant it is

Can I get more than 10% for tinnitus?
No. DC 6260 provides one 10% evaluation at most. Veterans sometimes receive additional compensation for separately service-connected conditions such as hearing loss or a mental health condition secondary to tinnitus.
